Acupuncture: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe if performed by a trained practitioner, and adverse effects are rare.  Only single-use sterile needles are used.  National certification requires four years of full time graduate-level education, hundreds of hours  of supervised practical training, and regular continuing education courses.

Do the needles hurt?

Acupuncture needles feel nothing like those used by your doctor or dentist.  Acupuncture needles are a fraction of the thickness of those used for other medical purposes.

Generally after insertion, the needles are painless.   You may feel a momentary heavy or sore sensation as your muscles react to the needle.  If a particular point happens to bother you, let us know.  We want your experience to be as comfortable and relaxing as possible

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture treatment benefits a variety of physical and mental conditions.

Extensive clinical trials have been done that have found acupuncture effective for conditions such as back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritic knee pain, and headache.

Acupuncture is used in the treatment of other conditions, such as certain digestive disorders, menstrual disorders, and emotional disorders.  In many cases of chronic disease, acupuncture is a useful adjunct to standard medicine.

Do I need to "believe in" acupuncture in order for it to work?

Fortunately, it works whether you believe in it or not.  We appreciate when you come with an open mind, but think you'll find the results convince you.

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional theories describe acupuncture as regulating the flow of qi in the body.  Qi can be understood as shorthand for many things, including proper oxygenation to tissues, and correct functioning of body structures.

It is known that acupuncture treatment causes the body to release endogenous neurotransmitters (natural painkilling chemicals) which may be responsible for some of the pain relieving effects.  Depending on the point needled, the connective tissues, muscles or nerves may be stimulated.  Acupuncture has an effect on inflammatory processes, and can be useful in promoting healing and managing chronic conditions.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Be sure to complete your new patient paperwork, ideally prior to your first appointment.   If you have any imaging reports from your MD, copies of these are useful to bring.  Also don't be afraid to bring any questions you might have!
Make sure you have eaten something within a few hours of your scheduled appointment.  Proper oral hydration both before and after treatment is essential.  Wearing a tank top or shorts or any other loose fitting clothing that rolls to just above the elbows and knees is helpful.
